South Africa Surprises and Heading Home

Where do I begin?  South Africa and Cape Town were so much more than we were expecting.  The weather was great.  The scenery is jaw dropping and the people are some of the warmest we've ever met.

Of course, there were the surprising things.   Like "load shedding".  That's what they call the rolling blackout we experienced everyday.  The electrical infrastructure is not really up to par and they have these blackouts every day.

One of the other things we've never seen anywhere are the people that hang out on streets and in parking lots to "watch over" your car.  They are very polite and very nice, but any contribution to them is in the form of a gratuity and not really necessary.

People walking and running along the freeway shoulders.  And we're talking hundreds of people.  Just a normal, everyday occurence.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

We popped in here while we were killing time waiting to go to the airport.  And, oh, what a place to pop into.  Beautiful!

Off To Amsterdam

For the return trip we got an extended layover in Amsterdam, a city we really enjoy.  That was until we stepped off the plane into 32 degree weather!!!  After 70's and 80's in Cape Town, this 32 felt like "oh damn!"

But we ventured into the city and spent some time at the Heineken Brewery and took a late night canal cruise.

Chloe, Abby and JJ....   we'll see you soon!
